3.3  Main Components

The CHU and VPU each come packaged separately. The Audio Interface is packaged together with the VPU.

3.3.1  Camera Head Unit (CHU)

The CHU is the specially designed Pixellot camera unit which captures a panoramic view of the action on the court/field. The CHU consists of four wide angle cameras which combine to provide up to 180 degree video coverage. The alignment of the camera positions are fixed to ensure optimal coverage. There are three different models of the S1 CHU: Ultra-Wide Angle, Wide Angle and Medium. The proper CHU for your venue is determined based on the installation position (i.e. height and distance from the field) and the court/field size.
After completing your site survey, consult with your Pixellot Support Agent to determine which model is appropriate for your installation. For guidelines for proper positioning of various models, see FIBER KIT INSTALLATION.
A harness comes out of the bottom of the CHU with all of the cables and wires needed to install the CHU.

The CHU includes the following elements:
Cameras – Four cameras, each of which captures wide angle video at up to 5 MP resolution.
Mics – two mics capture the ambient sound.
Mounting Rods – The CHU is mounted on a wall or pole by attaching the Mounting Rods to the Mounting Arm
Cable Harness - The CHU is connected to the VPU by four video cables and an audio cable. The cables, together with a grounding wire come out of the bottom of the CHU in the Cable Harness.

3.3.2  Audio Interface

This unit receives the analogue audio signal captured by the CHU mics and digitizes it. It then transmits the digitized audio to the VPU for integration into the video stream.

Y-Connector
The audio input is delivered from the CHU to the Audio unit using a specially designed Y-Connector.

Only use the specially designed Y-Connector provided by Pixellot, do not replace it with an off-the-shelf version because it will not be compatible with the system.

3.3.3  Video Processing Unit (VPU)

The VPU is the workstation that processes the video data that is input from the CHU. The VPU stitches the video from both cameras into a single panoramic view. Then, it applies Pixellot's patented AI auto-tracking algorithms to produce a professional quality broadcast of the sports event for cloud-based distribution to mobile devices and web platforms. The VPU is set up in a secure location at the sports venue, where it is connected by two Ethernet cables to the CHU. During the installation process you will need to connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the VPU to setup the initial configuration and internet connection.

The VPU includes the following elements:
  1. AC Power – an AC power adapter (included) plugs into a standard AC outlet.
  2. Ethernet Ports – used to connect to the Internet.
  3. USB3 Ports – The USB cable from the Audio Interface is connected to a USB3 Port on the VPU.
  4. PoE Ports – the Cat6a STP video cables from the CHU connect to these four ports, receiving video input and providing power to the CHU.

3.4  Installation Kits

The following Installation Kits (sold separately) are used for the installation process, depending on your venue's requirements.

3.4.1  Mount Kit

The following components are included in the Mount Kit, which is used for fixed installation of the S1 CHU.

  1. Mounting Arm – The mounting arm is used to secure the CHU in place. The arm can be mounted on a wall or it can be attached to a pole using the pole mounting bracket.
  2. Pole Mounting Bracket
    – This bracket is used when the CHU is being mounted on a pole. The bracket is secured to the pole using the metal bands. Once the bracket is in place the mounting arm can be attached to the bracket.
  1. Metal Bands – These bands are used to attach the pole mounting bracket to the pole. The bands provided are suitable for installation on a pole with a diameter from 3-5". For installation on a pole with a smaller or wider diameter you will need to obtain the appropriate metal bands.

  2. Adjustable Tilt Adapter – The adjustable tilt adapter is used to connect the CHU to the mounting arm. During installation you will adjust the adapter to find the correct Tilt angle for your CHU deployment location.

  3. Safety Cable
    – This cable is used to connect the CHU to a stable surface as an extra precaution against falling.

3.4.2  Surge Protector Kit

The Surge Protector Kit protects the units from being damaged by electrical surges. This kit is required for outdoor installation and recommended for indoor installation. Each kit includes four UBIQUITI surge protectors, one for each of the video cables.

3.4.3  Polarizer Kit

The Polarizer Kit is used to prevent prevents glare from the court's floorboards. This kit is recommended for indoor installation. The kit includes four polarized lenses, one for each of the CHU camera lenses

3.4.4  Extended Range Kit

Used for installations of the VPU further than 100 m (328' 1") cable length from the CHU. The Repeater Units extend the installation range to 200 m (656' 2"). One Repeater Unit is used for each of the four video cables.

Schematic Diagram

The following diagram shows the installation of the S1 using the Extended Range Kit.

3.4.5  Fiber Kit

Used for installations of the VPU at a location beyond 200 m (656' 2") cable distance from the CHU. For fiber installation, the Ethernet cables from the CHU and VPU connect to switches. The signal is sent between the switches over a duplex single mode fiber.

3.5  Additional Required Parts (Not Included)

The CHU is connected to the VPU by five Ethernet cables; four for video and one for audio. The cables themselves as well as all connectors and infrastructure needed to make the connections must be provided by the customer. The cables should be Cat7a STP (or higher rate). For outdoor installation, heavy duty outdoor cables should be used.

It is recommended to pass the cables through a conduit or protective tubing. For outdoor installation waterproof protective conduit or tubing is required.

3.5.1  Standard Installation

For a standard installation (i.e. less than 100 m (328' 1") cable length), five Cat7a STP (or higher rate) Ethernet cables are used to connect the CHU to the VPU. The cables should terminate with female connectors in a junction box on the CHU side and at wall outlets on the VPU side. The cables from the cable harness of the CHU are connected to the cables on one end and the other end is connected to the VPU using jumper cables.
The following is the list of required items:
  1. 5 X Cat7a STP Cables  (of required length, max. 100 m (328' 1"))
Note:  For outdoor installation, heavy duty outdoor cables should be used.
  1. Conduit or tubing (recommended for indoor, weatherproof conduit required for outdoor)
  2. 10 X female connectors (or outlets)
  3. 5 X Jumper cables
  4. Junction box (weatherproof standard IP55 (or higher)) – dimensions (HxWxD): 30 x 30 x 15 cm (12 x 12 x 6 in)

3.5.2  Extended Range Installation

If you will be installing the VPU at a distance greater than 100 m (328' 1") from the CHU (max. 200 m (656' 2") then you will need to use the Extended Ethernet Range Kit.
For installation at a distance greater than 200 m (656' 2") you will need to use the Fiber Kit, see Fiber Kit Installation
For this configuration, in addition to the items mentioned above, you will need the following additional
items:
  1. Junction box to house the Repeater Unit (recommended for indoor, required for outdoor) – must be ventilated (with temperatures not exceeding 45°C) and weatherproof  (IP55 or higher) – dimensions (HxWxD): 60 x 40 x 20 cm (24 x 16 x 8 in)
  2. 4 X Cat7a STP cables of the required length to connect the Repeater Unit to the VPU
Best practice is to position the Repeater Unit midway between the CHU and the VPU and use two pairs of cables of equal length. For example, for a distance of 160 m you would install the Repeater Unit 80 m from the CHU and use two pairs of 80 m cables.
  1. Conduit or tubing (recommended for indoor, weatherproof conduit required for outdoor)
  2. 8 X female connectors (or outlets)
  3. 4 X Jumper cables

3.6  Required Tools and Equipment

For the initial site survey, you will need a tape measure and a ladder.

For the actual installation of the Pixellot system you will also need additional tools (not provided), see belowin the link:

  1. Hex (Allen) wrench sizes 4 (5/32”/4mm) and 5 (3/16”/4.8mm)

  5. Flathead screwdriver
  6. Drill
  7. Cable tester (e.g. Fluke CableIQ or similar device)
You may need additional tools depending on what infrastructure preparations are needed at your site. Additional required tools may include:
  1. Platform for working at heights (e.g. ladder, scaffolding, Cherry Picker)
  2. Power saw
  3. Pliers
  4. Wire cutter
  5. Zip ties
You will also need to have a keyboard, mouse (included) and monitor (with a DVI or HDMI cable) available for running the initial pairing procedure.

4.0  Surveying the Site

The Pixellot S1 system is suitable for installation at both indoor and outdoor sports fields. Prior to ordering the system from Pixellot it is important to survey the site in order to determine which model of the Camera Head Unit (CHU) is appropriate for your installation position as well as to determine what Installation Kits will be needed. The site survey will also help you to determine what infrastructure preparations must be made to prepare for the installation.

The following details will need to be attached to the Site Survey Form.

Issues to clarify during the site survey:
  1. Structural modifications required to accommodate installation of the CHU (e.g. removing obstructions from the line of vision, installing a pole for mounting the CHU, removing obstacles from the path of the cables etc.).
  2. Infrastructure preparations needed for installation of the Visual Processing Unit (VPU) (i.e. an enclosed space with AC power and internet access).
  3. Precise location of the CHU installation (i.e. height and distance from the court/field)
You must make a precise and final decision on this issues since it impacts on which model of the CHU you order from Pixellot.
  4. Cable path from the CHU to VPU.
  5. Length of cable needed to connect the CHU to the VPU.

4.1  Site Requirements

4.1.1  CHU Location

The CHU must be positioned at (or near) the midline of the court/field at a distance of between 3 and 60 meters from the court/field with an unobstructed line of vision of the entire court/field. The CHU can be mounted on any stable surface such as a wall, ceiling or pole. If no suitable mounting surface is available then you will need to construct one, for example by installing a pole in the ground or dropping one down from the ceiling.

The supporting surface must be capable of supporting a load of at least 15 kg (33 lb).
Choosing the CHU Location
You need to designate the precise location of the CHU and record the height and distance from the court/field. You will use these measurements to order the correct model of the CHU from Pixellot, See Choosing The CHU Model.

The following are essential requirements for a suitable location for the CHU:

  1. At the midline of the court/field (+/- 5%)
  2. Distance: Min. 3 m (3.3 yd) from the near sideline, Max. 60 m (66 yd) from the near sideline
The min. acceptable distance and the recommended distance from the court/field differ depending on the court/field size. The larger the field, the further the CHU needs to be from the sideline. For example, for a Basketball court 3 meters from the sideline is acceptable but for a soccer or football field the distance should be at least 6 meters.
  3. Height: Min. 5 m (5.5 yd), Max. - the ratio of the distance to height can be up to 1:1.5 (i.e. at a distance of 5 m the height can be from 5 m to 7.5m, at a distance of 10 m the height can be from 5 m to 15 m)
  4. An unobstructed path can be prepared for the cables to connect to the VPU
  5. A location that is not an obstacle to and/or danger to the players or spectators
  6. Access to electrical grounding

The following are preferred characteristics for the ideal CHU location:

  1. For outdoor stadiums, the camera should be on the West side of the field facing East (i.e. facing away from the sun during afternoon events)
  2. The CHU does not obstruct the spectators' view of the court/field
  3. The CHU is not easily accessible by unauthorized people
The blue arrows in the pictures below show examples of good CHU locations:

Once you have designated the precise location for the installation of the CHU you should record the distance from the court/field and the height. You will give this information to your Customer Support Agent in order to determine which model of the CHU you should order.

4.1.2  VPU Location

The VPU must be set up in a dry, secure location that is not exposed to moisture, direct sunlight or impact from external objects (e.g. people, balls, animals etc.). The preferred solution is to set up the VPU in an enclosed room such as an office or utility room. If no such location is available, consult your Pixellot Support Representative for guidance in creating a dedicated enclosure to house the VPU.

The VPU location must conform to the following requirements:
  1. Inside an enclosed room that provides protection from moisture, direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold, collision of people or objects, access of unauthorized personnel.
  1. Located within 100 m (328' 1") of the CHU (accommodations can be made for a distance of up to 200 m (656' 2") using the Extended Range Kit)
It is possible to install the system at a distance greater than 200 m (656' 2") using the Fiber Kit, see Fiber Kit Installation.
  1. An unobstructed path is available for the cables to connect the VPU to the CHU
  2. Access to an AC power outlet with electrical grounding
  3. Access to an internet connection with an upload speed of 5 Mbps or better
  4. Check with your venue’s IT department to ensure streaming will be allowed through the network and make sure that following ports are open:
Port #          Protocols
123                  TCP
443                  TCP,UDP
2088                UDP

4.2  Choosing the CHU Model

There are three different models of the CHU: Normal, Wide Angle and Ultra-Wide Angle. The proper CHU for your venue is determined based on the installation position (i.e. height and distance from the field) and the court/field size.
Once you have completed the site survey, contact your Pixellot Support Agent to determine which model is appropriate for your installation. You will be asked to provide the precise height and distance from the court/field of the installation position. In addition you must provide the court/field size. Based on this input the agent will advise you as to the appropriate model.
Make sure that you have made a final decision about the CHU position before ordering the unit. The model that you order may not be appropriate for use in a different position.

4.2.1  Cable Configuration

You need to determine the path through which the cables will pass in order to connect the CHU to the VPU. You must also determine how the cables will be terminated and what additional components and parts will be needed to complete the cable installation.

Choosing the Cable Route
Choose the route using the following guidelines:
  1. Ensure that the cables and their conduits do not obstruct movement of players or spectators.
  2. If the cables will run along the floor/ground, make sure that they are below ground or flush with the ground so that they don't pose a tripping hazard.

Measuring the Cable Length
Measure the total length of cable needed to cover the route from the CHU to the VPU and record it. If the cable length is between 100 m (328' 1") and 200 m (656' 2"), then you will need to use the Extended Range Kit. If it is greater than 200 m (656' 2"), then you will need to use the Fiber Kit.

Required Components
Determine how the cables will terminate (connectors, outlets, surge protectors) and what additional components and parts will be required
If you are using the Extended Range Kit, you will need to provide an extra junction box to house the units as well as an additional set of cables to cover the extra distance.
For outdoor installation, heavy duty outdoor cables should be used.

For a list of additional items needed for fiber installation, see APPENDIX 1 - FIBER KIT INSTALLATION.
* Ordered from Pixellot. All other components must be supplied by the customer.

6.0  Installation

6.1  Preparing the Installation Report

After completing the installation, application will submit a comprehensive report to Pixellot and to additional email provided by you previously, documenting the precise configuration of your system setup. This report will enable support teams to help you with system configuration and troubleshooting.

This report will include pictures, screenshots and manual notes showing successful completion of various stages of the installation. It is important to capture these pictures and screenshots at the appropriate time during the installation

During the installation procedure, the camera icon indicates an image or screenshot that must be captured for submission with the Installation Report.

6.2  Unpacking the Components

  1.  Unpack the Pixellot components from the boxes.
  2.  Check that you have all additional items and tools that will be needed for the installation.

Take pictures of the stickers with the S/N and P/N on the boxes that the VPU and CHU came in. (Identical stickers also appear on the back of the VPU and on the bottom of the CHU).

Example:

We recommend that when you first arrive at the venue with all required components and cables you should do an initial test to detect problems with the cables or connectors before they have been permanently installed and ensure that the system is working properly. This test should be done before the cables are permanently installed along the route and before the CHU is mounted in position.

Step 1 - Preparing the Cables
  1. Lay out the cables along the route that they will pass to connect the CHU to the VPU but don't attach them in place.
  2. Terminate the cables with the female connectors or wall outlets that will be used for the final installation.
  3. If your system will include surge protectors and/or repeater units, set them up at the proper positions and attach the cables to them.
  4. For an extended range installation, connect the cables to the repeater units using the following procedure:
    1. Use  a jumper cable to connect one of the cables from the CHU side to one of the Out ports on one of the repeater units.

    2. Use a second jumper cable to connect one of the cables from the VPU side to the In port of the repeater unit.

    3. Repeat steps a and b for each repeater unit.

  5. Once the full route of the cables is set up, test each of the cables to make sure that none of the wires have shorts, crosses or disconnections. This is done using a cable testing device (e.g. Fluke Cable device).

Step 2 - Connecting the CHU

While the CHU is resting on the ground or on a stable surface, connect the four video cables in the CHU Cable Harness to the surge protectors or female connectors on the CHU end of the video cables. Connect the audio cable to the female connector on the CHU end of the audio cable.

Step 3 Connecting the VPU
  1. Set up the VPU on a secure flat surface (e.g. desktop), preferably in the facility where it will be permanently installed.
  2. Plug in the VPU's power adapter into a grounded AC power outlet.
  3. Power ON the VPU.
  4. Connect the four video cables in the CHU Cable Harness to the four PoE ports on the back of the VPU.

  5. Check that the four orange lights next for PoE connections light up.

Step 4 - Checking the Connection Speed

Repeat the system test that you did during product acceptance. This time, with the full cable route in place, although it hasn't been permanently attached.
  1. In the VPU taskbar, right click on the network connection icon and click on Open Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click Change adapter settings.
The Network Connections window opens. You should see four unidentified network connections.
  3. Double-click on each connection to open the Status window for that connection.
  4. Check that the speed for each connection is 1.0 Gbps.
If the test was successful, then you can proceed to the next test.
If any of the connections are not 1.0 Gbps, then check all of the cables and connections for that camera.

Step 5 – Checking the Camera Connections (JAI or Point Grey)

If you would like to, at this point you can run an additional test of the frame rate being acquired from the cameras. You will need to repeat this test upon completing the installation of the system. Use the procedures described in Section 7.1 - CONFIGURING THE CAMERA CONNECTIONS.

6.4  Preparing the Infrastructure

6.4.1  Installing the Mounting Arm

Secure the mounting arm in place in the location that you chose for placement of the CHU during the site survey as described in section CHOOSING THE CHU LOCATION. If the surface on which the mounting arm will be installed is not yet in place then begin by constructing the surface in the desired location. The Mounting Arm can be attached directly to the wall or ceiling or to a pole using the Pole Mounting Bracket.

Make sure that there is an electrical grounding point available near the CHU.

Make sure that the infrastructure is strong enough to support a 15 kg (33 lb) load

Wall Installation
To attach the mounting arm to a wall/ceiling:

The bands provided are suitable for installation on a pole with a diameter from 7-13 cm (3-5"). For installation on a pole with a smaller or wider diameter you will need to obtain the appropriate metal bands. The metal bands can also be adjusted to fit onto a rectangular profile.

6.4.2  Installing the Cables

Five Cat7a STP cables (four video and one audio) are used to connect the CHU to the VPU. They must be installed along the entire path from the CHU to the VPU and connected using the appropriate connectors. You will use the same items that were used in the PRE-INSTALLATION CHECK, but you will now attach the cables in their permanent positions.

For installation at a distance of greater than 200 m (556' 2") use the procedures described FIBER KIT INSTALLATION.

If you will be using direct scoreboard integration using the Integrated Scoreboard Kit then you will also need to pass a cable from the scoreboard or scoreboard controller to the VPU. If you are using an OCR Scoreboard Kit then you will need to pass a cable from the Scoreboard Camera to the VPU.

For outdoor installation, heavy duty outdoor cables should be used.

All infrastructure installation should be done by a trained technician.

Step 1 - Prepare the Cable Path
Starting from the CHU side prepare a path by which the cables can pass from the CHU to the VPU. It is recommended to prepare a conduit through which the cables can pass along the entire route.
For outdoor installation the cables should pass through a waterproof protective conduit or tubing.
Prepare the route using the following guidelines:
  • Ensure that the cables and their conduits do not obstruct movement of players or spectators.
  • If the cables run along the floor/ground, make sure that they are below ground or flush with the ground so that they don't pose a tripping hazard.

Step 2 -  Installing Junction Boxes with Surge Protectors and Repeater Units
If you are using a junction box/s (required for outdoor installation) use the following procedure:
  1. Attach the junction box housing the surge protectors to a pole or wall within 1 meter of the CHU.
  2. If you are using Repeater Units, install a second junction box midway between the CHU and VPU.
  3. In the first junction box (closest to the CHU), install the surge protectors.

  4. In the second junction box install the Repeater Units.
Step 3 -  Installing the Cables
Once the path has been prepared, install the cables along the entire path form the CHU to the VPU, being careful not to damage the cables.
Mark the audio cable to differentiate it from the other cables.
  1. Ensure the cables are secured in place along the entire route.
  2. If your system includes Repeater Units, connect the cables to the repeater units using the following procedure:
    1. Use a jumper cable to connect one of the cables from the CHU side to one of the Out ports on one of the Repeater Units.

                  b. Use a second jumper cable to connect one of the cables from the VPU side to the In port of the Repeater Unit.

c. Repeat steps a and b for each Repeater Unit.

Don't connect the cables to the CHU and VPU until they have been tested.

Step 4 - Re-testing  the Cables
Once the full route of the cables is set up and attached along the entire route. Re-test each of  the cables to make sure that none of the wires were damaged during the installation. This is done using a cable testing device (e.g. Fluke Cable device).

6.5  Installing the System

6.5.1  Installing the CHU

  1. Disassemble the adjustable tilt adapter by removing the two bolts from the face of the unit.

  2. Separate the outer casing from the mounting hub. (The outer casing will be attached to the CHU and the mounting hub will be attached to the mounting arm.)
  3. Remove the bolt connecting the mounting disc to the outer casing.
  4. Attach the outer casing to the CHU as follows:
    1. Insert the bolt through the mounting disc from the inside so that the head fits into the cavity in the disc.
    2. Insert the ridge on the mounting disc into the groove between the mounting bars from the inside.

Best practice is to attach the casing to the top third of the mounting bars. In case of obstructions other positions are acceptable.
Make sure that the CHU is positioned right side up, as indicated by the fact that the cable harness comes out of the bottom of the unit.

                  c. Attach the outer casing to the outside of the mounting bars and secure it in place with the nut.

      5. Attach the mounting hub to the mounting arm as follows:
    1. Verify that the mounting arm is firmly attached to the supporting surface. See Installing the Mounting.
    2. Verify that the main allen bolt in the center of the mounting hub is securely tightened.
    3. Insert the mounting hub into the socket of the mounting arm with the gap in the upper rim facing forward (in alignment with the protrusion on the mounting arm socket).
    4. Rotate the mounting hub until faces towards the court/field. (You will fine tune the alignment later.)
    5. Tighten the bolts on both sides evenly.

         6. If you are using the Polarizer Kit (recommended for indoor installation, see Polarizer Kit), attach one of the polarized lenses to each of the four CHU camera lenses.
         7. If you would like to pass the cable harness through the cavity, remove the cover from the opening on the bottom of the mounting arm.
         8. Pick up the CHU by the mounting bars and climb a ladder or other elevated platform to reach the position of the mounting arm.
Make sure to take the nuts and bolts that you removed from the face of the adjustable mounting bracket with you as well as all requited tools.

9. If you would like to pass the cable harness through the cavity in the mounting arm, then insert it into the opening in the bottom of the mounting arm and gently pull it through the gap in the base of the mounting arm.
